ABOUT THIS MATERIAL
WHY CORTEN FOR CLADDING?
COR-TEN® is a high-strength, structural weathering steel that eliminates the need for painting and maintenance by forming a stable, rust-like protective patina. Its unique chemical composition makes it the premier choice for architects and developers looking for a raw, industrial aesthetic that actually grows more durable over time.
“A self-healing material that evolves with its environment—offering decades of structural performance without the cost of corrosion-prevention treatments.”
We supply genuine SSAB COR-TEN® as raw coils and flat sheets, produced under license from U.S. Steel to ensure exact chemical and mechanical properties. Our materials are provided in their un-weathered state for factories and fabricators to process into custom facade panels, architectural screens, and structural features that will develop their signature protective layer once installed on-site.
Self-Protecting Patina
Engineered to form a dense, stable oxide layer that acts as a natural barrier, significantly slowing further corrosion over time.
Virtually Maintenance-Free
The anti-corrosive properties eliminate the need for painting or repeated protective treatments throughout the building’s lifecycle.
Engineered Longevity
Genuine SSAB COR-TEN® ensures the material performs for decades in demanding environments, outlasting standard carbon steel.
Superior Tolerances
Mechanical properties and dimensional tolerances that exceed EN 10025-5 standards for higher precision during fabrication.
Verified Authenticity
Produced under license from U.S. Steel, conforming to EN S355J2WP and ASTM standards to guarantee consistent weathering results.
Sustainable Lifecycle
A 100% recyclable material with a “self-healing” surface, supporting Green Star ratings and modern eco-conscious builds.
APPLICATIONS
WHO USES IT & HOW
FABRICATORS
Cut, fold and laser-form into custom facade cassettes, architectural screens and landscape features. Works seamlessly with standard workshop equipment and welding processes.
ARCHITECTS & DESIGNERS
Specify for high-impact commercial and public facades where a raw, evolving industrial aesthetic is required. Favored for its ability to “self-heal” and blend with its environment.
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
Utilise flat sheets for retaining walls, planters and public art. Provides a durable, organic finish that integrates perfectly into both urban and natural environments.
INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEERS
Specify for bridges, utility poles and heavy structures where high-strength steel and zero-maintenance are critical for project longevity.
CLADDING MANUFACTURERS
Feed master coils directly into profiling lines to produce specialized weathering steel panels. Consistent gauge tolerances ensure reliable production runs.
COMMERCIAL BUILDERS
Order direct for large-scale project supply across AU and NZ. Genuine COR-TEN® ensures full compliance with international fire and structural standards.

THE NATURAL PROCESS
THE PATINA JOURNEY
Tracking the maturation of genuine SSAB COR-TEN®. As the material is exposed to alternating wet and dry cycles, it develops a self-healing oxide layer. This journey from Mill Finish to a Matured Finish eliminates the need for painting and provides a unique industrial aesthetic that lasts for decades.
MILL FINISH*
As SuppliedThe steel in its raw, unweathered state. A distinct bluish-grey metallic texture that marks the beginning of the structural maturation process.
TRANSITION*
6 – 12 MonthsAtmospheric exposure triggers the initial oxidation. The surface develops a textured spectrum of ochre, orange, and distinct blue-oxide highlights.
STABILIZED*
2 – 5+ YearsThe protective patina reaches full density. The finish settles into a permanent, matte “Burnt Orange” or deep chocolate brown shield.
*Note on Natural Variation: Genuine COR-TEN® is a living material. The cycles shown represent the nominal maturation process. Actual final appearance is determined by local micro-climates, moisture levels, and installation orientation.
